The Beverly Republican City Committee (BRCC) announced today in honor of the annual Welcome Home Veterans Cookout that it will donate a new sign for the exterior of the GAR Hall on Dane Street in Beverly as a gift to the city’s veterans.
In addition to the redesigned sign, the BRCC will also secure a landscaping company to refresh the area in front of the building and around the new sign.
BRCC Chairman, Eamon Fennessy, commented, “As our group continues to become more involved in the community, we saw the condition of the GAR Hall sign as an opportunity to participate in the Homecoming activities and give back to the veteran’s community, so we approached the city with the idea. The new sign recognizes the historic nature of the building and the city’s veterans and raises awareness for the VFW post’s new name in honor of the Fortunato family.”
The GAR Hall building was the meeting hall for the John H. Chipman Grand Army of the Republic Post #89 and has been owned by the City of Beverly since 1960. In past years, the building has housed the city’s veterans services agent and has recently been re-enlisted as the meeting place for the Fortunato VFW Post #545, which renamed its post in honor of the four Fortunato family members from Beverly who served in the military.
Beverly’s Homecoming celebration originated in 1960 as a way to welcome home Vietnam veterans and is now in its 43rd year. The annual Welcome Home Veterans Cookout is being held today at Lynch Park at 4pm.
“I am really pleased with the collective efforts of the community to help us restore the property and hope there are other groups who might take an interest as well,” commented Tim Smith, the VFW post Commander.
The new sign for the GAR Hall will be produced and installed by United Sign of Beverly, a member of the Beverly Chamber of Commerce.
The BRCC, the Beverly Chamber of Commerce, the office of Mayor Bill Scanlon and the Fortunato VFW Post #545 will hold an unveiling event at the GAR Hall in September to highlight the new sign and other improvements being made to the building by the VFW.
